Goal: Design a simple smart thermostat system to help reduce carbon emissions and the cost of heating bills for people living alone.
Objectives:
1. Survey Medford residents to gather data on average thermostat temperatures and time they are in their homes. .
2. Compute carbon and dollar costs and savings based on a reduction of 8 degrees on a thermostat during hours when the user is away using figures from the EPA.
3. Use SOLIDWORKS, Blender and Adobe Products to design a simple smart thermostat system and a price point for it.
4. Use Excel to calculate the rate of return and break even point for a consumer that would use the thermostat.

Results
The Smart Thermostat lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 24.7% and heating bill costs by 36.4%, providing environmental and dollar savings to users.
